Situation
I am particularly opposed to keychains. I don’t like the bulk or rattle they create. And especially when sharing cars but always needing a studio key on me, I needed a better solution.
Task
Create a 3D printable key holder that fits in a wallet without catching on any jagged edges, is easily accessible with one hand, and is a simple pressure fit assembly.
Action
- Imported a few reference images of the key into Blender
- Designed a pressure fit attachment that fits the holes in the key head
- I designed a swivel mechanism initially for one key, but was not satisfied with the usability and size.
- Switched to a sliding mechanism that allows two keys to ride side by side in a credit card sized profile.
- In both solutions, the key formed part of the mechanism by providing a lip on top. Combined with the printed backing, the key slides or swivels by sandwiching the body of the slider.
- Printed in PLA on a MakerGear M2
