Situation

The stock TVÄRHAND lamp leaves the bulb completely exposed, which looks great with a large, dim bulb. However, I wanted to use brighter smart bulbs. A diffuser was needed to soften the light and reduce glare when looking at the lamp directly.

Task

Create a shade that nests inside the existing metal frame without any modifications or adhesives and diffuses the light evenly.

Action

  • I was able to find an existing 3D model of the lamp frame online to use as a reference for dimensions.
  • Modeled a reference bulb to ensure clearance
  • Designed the diffuser to friction fit into the lamp frame
  • Printed in vase mode (one continuous spiral) using white PLA
  • Placed one or two layers of tape around the neck of the diffuser to increase friction

Result

The diffuser slides perfectly into the frame, hides the bulb, and spreads light evenly without casting harsh shadows.
