Hydroponic Planter

Situation

I wanted a small, self-watering hydroponic planter for my apartment that could go a month between refills.

Task

Design a 3D-printed vase insert that allows water to be wicked up to the plants as needed or completely submerge the roots.

Action

• The design is based on inexpensive dollar store glass vases.
• After measuring the dimensions with calipers, I designed a 3D model in Blender.
• The insert is very simple and consists of:
  • A bowl area for the plant
  • A lip that rests on the vase rim
  • Holes perfectly sized for a wick to pass through
• Printed using PLA on a MakerGear M2.
