Automated Roof Measurements

Roof measurement reports are quite expensive for simply collecting roof square footage. My brother wanted a straightforward tool without the high markup, so I built one that takes an address, estimates roof area and replacement costs, and displays the results in a 3D viewer.
How It Works
I started with a full-stack template I’d built using Vite/React and Node/Express/Sequelize/PostgreSQL. From there, I:
- Integrated the Google Solar API to fetch satellite imagery, footprint masks, and DSM data.
- Used Three.js server-side to process the DSM data and footprint masks into a roof point cloud. Automated noise reduction and outlier removal let me estimate surface area accurately using deterministic algorithms.
- Stored the data in Backblaze and PostgreSQL.
- Used Three.js client-side to display third-party files, processed point clouds, and roof analysis results.
Compared to other paid services, this tool provides similar roof square footage and cost estimates at little to no hosting or provider cost for a small-scale project. The 3D viewer shows the roof structure and exactly which points are included in the calculation for a given address.
